Guide Updated August 2026
Is SEO worth it for a small trade business?
Sometimes, and the test is specific enough to run yourself. Managed SEO in Australia runs between $500 and $5,000 a month on published agency ranges. It is worth it when people already search for what you sell in the areas you work, and when one won job is worth more than a month of that. For most trades a single won job runs to thousands, so it is not close. Where nobody searches, it is not worth it.
Written by Tyson Farrington, who runs tyso from Canberra. The measurement figures on this page are tyso's own, from a dated run of the same eight questions each month.
When is SEO worth it for a trade business?
Two conditions, and you can check both before you pay anyone. First, do people search for what you sell in the areas you work? Second, is one won job worth more than a month of the work costs? For most Australian trades the second is not close: a single bathroom, roof or repaint is worth thousands, and the work costs hundreds a month.
The published market ranges, what moves the price, and what tyso charges are all on the SEO cost guide. Run the ratio against your own numbers rather than a percentage of revenue somebody quoted at you.
What does SEO cost, and what does it have to return?
Between $500 and $5,000 a month for managed SEO, going by what Australian agencies publish themselves. StudioHawk publishes $500 to $5,000 per month. Firewire Digital publishes $1,500 to $5,000 and up, with campaigns starting from $2,500 a month. Those are their figures rather than mine, quoted here because they are published.
Year one of the Growth Engine is $10,914, being the $4,950 install plus twelve months at $497. That is a number you can divide before you speak to anyone: for most Australian trades, where a single won job runs to thousands, it comes out at a small handful of jobs. And the target is written down before the work starts. Double your documented enquiries within 90 days of launch or every dollar comes back, the install and the monthlies both, with the money held untouched until the number doubles. Full terms are on the Growth Engine page, and the wider market picture is on the SEO cost guide.
The free audit
No charge
It reads your site, measures your mobile speed with Google PageSpeed, and asks an AI assistant who it recommends in your suburb. You see the score before it asks for an email, so finding out whether you need any of this costs you nothing.
Deep Audit: Google + AI
$490
Your website, your Google Business Profile and your AI-search visibility read properly, with a fix roadmap and the competitor picture. Credited in full against any build within 60 days, so if you go ahead it cost you nothing.
The Growth Engine
$4,950 install, then $497 a month
Not an SEO retainer, and it would be dishonest to line it up against one. The website, the Google profile, local SEO, AI search and instant lead response, installed and run as one system on a twelve-month minimum.
When is it not worth it?
It is not worth it in four situations, and they are worth naming because most of the industry will not name them. Being told no is cheaper than finding out slowly.
There is no search demand
Nobody searches for what you sell. If your work comes entirely through builders or one repeat commercial client, there is no demand to capture and no optimisation invents it. Referral work is not a lesser business, it is just a different machine.
You are already full
You cannot take more work. If you are booked six months out and not hiring, more enquiries are a nuisance rather than a win. Fix the price before you fix the marketing: the same jobs at better rates beats more jobs at the same ones.
The money has to come in now
You need work this week. Search is slow ground: months before the trend is clear. A trade with no cash coming in needs something faster running alongside it, and pretending otherwise is how people end up disappointed six months later.
You are leaving the trade
You are moving on soon. The work compounds over years, so if the business is winding down or being sold shortly, the return arrives after you have left. Spend it on something with a shorter payback.
How long does SEO take to pay off?
Weeks for the Google Business Profile, months for the rest. The profile is the fastest surface to fix because it is a set of fields you control directly. Pages and rankings take longer, usually three to six months before the trend is clear enough to judge, because they depend on how much work everyone else is already doing.
That lag is the real reason to start with a measurement instead of a promise. If you know what your position was on day one, month four is a fact rather than an argument.
What actually makes the difference?
The four things that decide it, in the order they usually matter for a trade business. None of them is exotic, and a one-person business can do all four.
The Google profile
A Google Business Profile filled in completely and kept current, not set once on verification day. For most trades this is the single biggest source of local enquiries, and it is free.
Reviews, asked for
Reviews arriving steadily, asked for properly. Inside the Australian rules: no incentives, nothing filtered, nothing invented. Sophisticated Manes, a tyso build, went from 3 to 10 in its first month live simply by asking.
Pages that answer
A page for each job you actually do and each area you actually work, written plainly. Not a stack of near-identical suburb pages, which Google has filtered for years, but real pages about real work.
Answering the phone
Answering enquiries fast. The best search result in your suburb is worth nothing if the call goes to voicemail and nobody texts back. The lead goes to whoever answers first, and it never shows up as a loss anywhere you can see.
Has AI made SEO pointless?
The surface moved and the signals mostly did not. People now ask an assistant instead of scrolling ten links, and the assistant names two or three businesses rather than returning a page of them. What it reads to decide is familiar: a complete Google profile, facts that agree everywhere, reviews, and plain answers on your own pages.
We measure this rather than assert it. In August 2026, ANT Painting, whose search presence tyso runs, was cited by Google's AI Overviews on 7 of 22 painting questions. The method and the full results are in what AI cites for tradie marketing, and how to show up in ChatGPT is the step-by-step version.
Questions
Is SEO worth it for a small business?
Sometimes, and the test is specific. It is worth it when people already search for what you sell in the areas you work, and when one won job is worth more than a month of the work costs. For most Australian trades both are true, because a single won job is worth thousands. Where nobody searches for what you sell, it is not worth it.
What does SEO cost in Australia?
Between $500 and $5,000 a month for managed SEO, going by the ranges Australian agencies publish. StudioHawk publishes $500 to $5,000 per month. Firewire Digital publishes $1,500 to $5,000 and up, with campaigns starting from $2,500 a month. Where you sit inside that depends on your competition, your service area and how much is done for you.
How do I work out if SEO will pay for itself?
Run it on one job. Take what a won job is actually worth to you, then ask how many extra jobs a year would cover the cost of the work. Year one of the tyso Growth Engine is $10,914, being $4,950 to install plus twelve months at $497, so for a trade whose average job runs to a few thousand that is a small handful of jobs. If it takes ten, the maths is telling you something.
How long before SEO does anything?
Months, not weeks, and that is the honest version. A Google Business Profile can move inside a few weeks because it is the fastest surface to fix. Pages and rankings take longer, usually three to six months before the trend is clear. Anyone promising next week is selling something they do not control.
Is SEO better than Google Ads?
No. Ads stop the day you stop paying and the price per click keeps climbing. Search results you earn keep arriving afterwards. The honest split is that ads buy you speed and search buys you ground, and a trade with no leads at all often needs both for a while.
What if nobody searches for what I do?
Then it is not worth it, and you should be told that before you pay anyone. If almost nobody searches for what you sell, no amount of optimisation invents demand. The tyso audit is free precisely so that answer costs you nothing to get.
Is SEO dead now that people use AI?
It changed, and quickly. People now ask an assistant instead of scrolling ten links, and the assistant names two or three businesses. The signals it reads are mostly the old ones: a complete Google profile, facts that agree, reviews, plain answers on your own pages. The work did not die, the surface it feeds moved.
Can I do SEO myself?
You can, and for a one-person trade business that is a real option. It costs hours instead of money: the Google profile, asking every happy customer for a review, and a page for each job you do. It works if you genuinely have the hours. The version that stalls is paying someone to point while you do the work.
How do I tell if my SEO is actually working?
Ask what was done last month and expect a specific answer. Real work names things: this page written, this profile field fixed, these reviews asked for. A report generated out of a tool, with rankings that never move and an invoice that always clears, is the most common way this goes wrong.
Find out before you spend anything.
The audit reads your site, measures your mobile speed with Google PageSpeed, and asks an AI assistant who it recommends in your suburb. If it says you are fine, that is a fine answer and it cost you nothing.
