Marketing for plumbers in Australia
Marketing a plumbing business runs in an unusual order. The Google Business Profile comes first, because plumbing demand is mostly emergencies and an emergency search picks from the map without scrolling. Then reviews, then pages for the jobs people search in a panic, then answering within minutes. Ads come last, once the free surfaces convert.
Written by Tyson Farrington, who runs tyso from Canberra. tyso has not built for a plumbing business yet, and says so further down. The citation figures here are tyso's own measurements, dated and repeated monthly against the same set of questions.
Why is plumbing marketing different to other trades?
Plumbing marketing is different because the demand is urgent, and urgency does not browse. Someone standing in a wet hallway does not open six tabs and compare. They tap the first business that looks open, close and trusted, and that decision happens inside the map results before your website is ever seen.
Which means the usual advice, build a better website first, is the wrong order for this trade. The profile is where the choosing happens. What that work involves is on Google profile management.
What actually gets a plumber more work?
Four things get a plumber more work, and the order matters more than the list: the Google Business Profile, reviews arriving steadily, pages for the jobs people search in an emergency, and answering within minutes. Ads come after all four, not instead of them.
Most plumbers are already doing number four badly and numbers one and two not at all, which is why the cheapest gains sit at the top of this list rather than the bottom.
The Google Business Profile
Every field filled, the right primary category, real photos of real jobs, hours that are actually true including after hours. This is free, it is the biggest single source of local plumbing enquiries, and most profiles were filled in once on verification day and never touched again.
Reviews, arriving steadily
Asked for at the moment the job is done, every time, with a direct link. No incentives and nothing filtered, because that breaches Google policy and the ACCC rules. Reviews are the tiebreaker between you and the plumber ranked beside you.
Pages for emergency jobs
One page per job people search in an emergency: burst pipes, blocked drains, hot water, gas fitting, leak detection. Named the way a customer would say it, not the way a trade would. Vague service lists match nothing.
Answering within minutes
A text back within minutes, missed calls included. Plumbing customers ring down a list until somebody answers, so response time is a bigger lever here than in any other trade. RELAYX is the studio's own tool for exactly this.
When should a plumber start paying for ads?
A plumber should start paying for ads once the free surfaces convert, and not before. Paid clicks for plumbing are among the most expensive in the trades, and the bids tell you why: the keyword data for this market shows top-of-page bids reaching over $31 for plumbing search terms. That is what competitors will pay for one click, not one job.
Pointing that spend at a business Google cannot describe, with no reviews and a phone nobody answers, is a tap left running. Ads amplify what already works. They do not fix what does not.
Where does plumbing marketing money leak?
Plumbing marketing money leaks in four places, and it is the same four almost every time: renting leads instead of owning ground, a profile left dormant, missed calls nobody follows up, and a website written in trade language. None of them is exotic and all of them are fixable in a fortnight.
Renting instead of owning
Renting leads from a marketplace that sells the same enquiry to four plumbers and keeps the customer. You compete on who answers fastest and who quotes lowest, and the day you stop paying you have built nothing.
A dormant profile
A profile filled in once and abandoned. No new photos, no posts, hours that go stale over Christmas, questions nobody answered. The listing above you is not doing anything clever, it is doing the basics continuously.
The call that went to voicemail
Missed calls that nobody follows up. The most common and least visible leak in the trade, because a job you never knew about does not appear in any report you read.
A site built for nobody
A website that lists services in trade language and buries the phone number. On a phone, in an emergency, the number needs to be one thumb away and the page needs to load before the panic passes.
Has tyso built for a plumber?
No. tyso has not built for a plumbing business yet, and this page is worth less if it pretends otherwise. The work above is the same work, and it has been run for a painter and for a cat groomer, both named so you can go and look at them.
ANT Painting is a Canberra painting business whose search presence tyso runs, at antpainting.com.au. It was cited on 9 of 22 painting questions we measured on 29 August 2026, across Google's AI Overviews and ChatGPT search. Sophisticated Manes, at sophisticatedmanes.au, is a tyso build whose Google reviews went from 3 to 10 in its first month live. The full painter version of this page is leads for a painting business.
Do AI assistants recommend plumbers yet?
They already do. On 1 October 2026 we asked ChatGPT thirteen plumbing questions for Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, three times each, and in every city it named or linked a verified local plumber on 11 of the 13. Asked for the best plumber in Canberra, it named businesses every time. What it mostly did not do was link them: across all ten trade and city sets, 923 of 1,144 mentions had no link to the business's own website.
Google's AI Overview mostly stays off the emergency question: it was missing on 70 percent of the plain emergency searches, and whenever it was missing, across the whole run, the map was there 150 times out of 157. That is the map pack again, which is why the profile comes first on this page. The two engines also read different webs: of all the websites they linked, 15.6 percent were linked by both, which is why no honest version of this work sells you a single AI visibility score. The full method and the raw counts are in AU AI Search Watch, Edition 3, and how to show up in ChatGPT is the step-by-step version. Nobody controls a model's output, so what tyso promises is a dated baseline and a re-test.
Questions plumbers ask
What is the best marketing for a plumbing business?
The Google Business Profile, first and by a distance. Most plumbing work is urgent and local, so the map results sit above everything else and get chosen before anyone scrolls. A complete, active profile with steady reviews beats a better website every time for a plumber.
Why does the Google profile matter so much for plumbers?
Because plumbing demand is mostly emergencies, and an emergency search does not browse. Someone with water coming through a ceiling taps the first business that looks open, close and trusted. That decision happens inside the map results, which is why the profile outranks the website in priority.
How do plumbers get more Google reviews?
Ask every customer, at the moment the job is done and the relief is fresh. Inside the Australian rules: no incentives, nothing filtered, nothing invented, because incentivised reviews breach Google policy and the ACCC takes a dim view. A simple text with the direct link is the whole system.
Are Google Ads worth it for plumbers?
Only after the free surfaces are working. Ads for plumbing are expensive, and pointing paid clicks at a business Google cannot describe is a tap left running. Get the profile, the reviews and the response time right first, then ads amplify something that already converts instead of masking something that does not.
Should I use hipages or Airtasker for plumbing leads?
A lead marketplace sells the same enquiry to several plumbers and keeps the customer relationship, so you are renting access and competing on speed and price with three other people. Stop paying and nothing remains. A profile and a website you own keep producing after the invoices stop.
How fast do I need to answer a plumbing enquiry?
Minutes. Plumbing is the trade where speed to lead matters most, because the customer is calling down a list until somebody answers. A missed call with no text back is a job that went to whoever picked up, and it never appears as a loss anywhere you can see.
What pages does a plumber's website need?
Pages for the jobs people search in an emergency: burst pipes, blocked drains, hot water systems, gas fitting, leak detection. Named plainly, one per job, saying what it costs to come out and how fast you can get there. Vague service lists give a search engine nothing to match against a specific panic.
What do AI assistants use to decide which plumber to name?
Your Google profile fields, your reviews, the directories you appear in, and any plain answers on your own site. In our September 2026 run the two engines shared only 16.5 percent of the sources they cited, so being visible to one of them says almost nothing about the other.

The audit reads your site and asks an AI assistant who it recommends in your suburb. You see the score before it asks for an email.
