Working hard doesn't get you ahead

It just gets you by. The way people pick a tradie just changed into something you can't see, and most of your competitors haven't noticed.

A pale spoked cartwheel sliding off the end of a floating axle as a single small burnt-orange linchpin lifts free: the small hidden part the whole system hangs on.

The bloke booking out his whole month isn't better than you. He might be worse. He just got found first.

That's the part that stings. It was never only about the work. You can be sharper on the tools, faster, more honest with a quote, and still watch someone with half your skill take the jobs. Not because he won. Because you were never in the running. The customer never saw you.

Word of mouth just moved house

For most of history there was one way to get picked: word of mouth. Someone asks a mate, the mate names a name. Same system since the first bloke patched the second bloke's roof. It still runs. But the ground just moved under it, and that's why everything feels different all of a sudden.

The conversation you're not in

Here's the new version of asking a mate.

It's a weeknight. Kettle on. Someone's got a leak under the sink, and instead of scrolling a whole page of Google results, they open up an AI and just talk to it. Like they'd talk to a mate who knows everyone. Who do I call for this? A bit of back and forth. Then: give me a couple of names near me.

And somewhere, in a conversation you will never see, three names come back. Yours might not be one of them.

Say it is. Say you make the shortlist. Now the customer's looking at three businesses they know nothing about. Same suburb, same trade, three strangers. So they go off the only thing they can see.

The stars.

Reviews are the lynchpin. A lynchpin is that little pin holding the wheel on the axle: looks like nothing, pull it and the wheel comes off at speed. In an AI's shortlist, your rating is the whole pitch. The customer can't see your work, your face, or your van. They see a number and a handful of words from people like them. That's all they've got to go on, so that's what they pick on. The most stars takes the tap.

Whoever replies first wins

Then comes the part that ends it.

They message the one they tapped, and whoever replies quick wins. Not the best reply. The fast one. A text comes back before the kettle's even boiled, and that's enough: the phone goes face-down on the bench, the search is over, they get on with their night. The other two names reply the next arvo, to a job already booked. That instant reply is what RELAYX is built to do, and it's the whole gap between a lead and a sorry, went with someone else.

It only works whole

Now look at the whole thing at once.

Found, chosen, followed up. One motion. A ute doesn't run on one good tyre, and this doesn't run on one good part. The AI search, your Google profile, the website behind it, the reviews, the quick reply: pull any single one and the whole thing stalls. A great profile with no reviews is a handshake with no grip. Brilliant reviews and a phone nobody answers fast is a wheel with the pin pulled. It only works whole.

And here's what should sit you up: almost none of your competitors have built for any of this. A sign on the ute and a prayer. They're still waiting for the phone to ring the old way, while the conversation moves somewhere they can't hear it. The window where this is a real head start is open right now. The trades that wire it up this year are the names the AI hands out for the next ten.

That's the work I do, and I do the parts most agencies quietly send offshore. AI-native, one person, the whole machine in one set of hands. No layers, no three-week wait for a meeting about a meeting. I get you found in the new search, tune the reviews until they pull their weight, wire up the instant reply, then run the thing while you're out on the tools.

You bring the trade. I'll build the machine around it.
